The first rule to styling flower arrangements in Vase! Throw out the rulebook. “You can approach styling in so many ways. I like to think of the flowers as a hairstyle for the vase and there’s no right or wrong in my opinion – it’s about choosing flowers you love and enjoying the process of arranging them”
1. Consider the vase
You need to choose a vase that’s suitable for the size and color of the arrangement you want to create. Grand bouquets will need a large vase with a wide opening, while narrow, small vases look just as eye-catching filled with single stems. Work in conjunction with the shape and style of the vase. For a tall vase, make your arrangement tall to match. Don’t cut the stems down.
2. Choose a theme
The choices are endless. You could choose different flowers you love and add in some greenery or you could work in one colorway with one type of flower to make it a seasonal arrangement. Don’t be stingy with them – they’ll add a lovely brightness and smell fantastic too.
3. Create a base
Balance is key in any floral arrangement, so first, create a base or initial shape with greenery before adding your chosen stems. When you start adding in flowers or extra greenery, work on the left, then on the right, then at the center as you style. I work with bunches of three – using odd numbers helps to create a more natural-looking arrangement. Also some vases can be style in their design family to complete design look.
4. Don’t overthink it
Have fun with it. If the simplicity and beauty of the flower is what you enjoy, sometimes all you need is a few stems. It might be just one stem this week, then armfuls of blooms spilling over the next. If you love how it looks once you’ve finished, then that’s all that really matters.
5. Try something different
Unique shapes allow you to style the vase individually too. You’re not limited to using flowers. Go wild. How about collecting a load of driftwood, pebbles, and shells and filling a vase with these? Unique shapes are the statement style for such vases.
